Oltre la Gabbia / Beyond the Grid
Oltre la Gabbia / Beyond the Grid is the final thesis of my MA in Visual and Multimedia Communication at Iuav University of Venice (graduated on April 2011). Even if I am a graphic designer - or maybe thanks to this - the thesis deals with the topics of time, design and society.
Oltre la Gabbia / Beyond the Grid is a survey on the subject of time in relation to work, and in particular to intellectual professions. The project starts from the basis that modern society still keeps many legacies of the Fordist method of work — which is still applied indiscriminately to all areas of work. This includes the intellectual professions, in spite of their peculiar timing requirements, to which contemporary society does not respond properly yet.
In more than 200 pages, Oltre la Gabbia / Beyond the Grid features interviews with designers and renowned Italian experts such as: Domenico De Masi, Pierenrico Andreoni, Giovanni Anceschi, Anthony Burrill, Andrea Branzi, Erik Kessels, Eike König, Elliott Earls, Daniel Eatock, Gilberto Corretti, Stefan Sagmeister.
«Today as always, men fall into two groups: slaves and free men. Whoever does not have two-thirds of his day for himself, is a slave, whatever he may be: a statesman, a businessman, an official, or a scholar.» — Friedrich Nietzsche
A small dossier about the project can be downloaded here – Italiano / English (updated January 2011). The dossier includes a presentation of the thesis, the first introductive chapter and the list of the people interviewed, with some quotations from each of them (see also here).
